Almost opposite Zonar's zaharoplasteion (pastry shop), on the street popularly known as Panepistimiou and officially known as Venizelou, stands the mansion where the discoverer of Troy, Mycenae and much else besides once lived. Designed and built for Heinrich Schliemann by Ernst Ziller, this grand mansion houses the Numismatic Museum, a collction of some of the six hundred thousand coins encompassing examples from the Hellenic, Roman, Byzantine, medieval and modern eras, along with medals, seals and a hoard of gems. Digital touch screens and a multi-media room bring the museum into the 21st century.
