( Worth Seeing )

This is one of the few archaeological sites in Athens that is scarcely worth the price of admission. Its chief feature is the Tower of the Winds, which can, in any case, easily be seen from outside the walls. Apart from this, the mainly ground-level ruins are somewhat diminished by weeds and the packs of cats and dogs which have taken up residence. The small, attractive Fethiye Mosque, built in 1458 and dedicated by Sultan Mehmet II, is nowadays surrounded by lovely orange trees, but only used as a storeroom. Opposite the site entrance are the remains of a Medresse, an Islamic seminary which was destroyed by Greeks rebelling against the Turks during the War of Independence. It had been a prison and the tree in the courtyard was used for hangings.
