Plateía Omonoías (Omonia Square)
(
Worth Seeing
)
On some news-stands, among the picture postcards of Athens you occasionally find one of a picturesque Omonia Square, with
a fountain and greenery in the centre and a few cars driving by. This is a very old postcard. For many years now the square
has had numerous hoardings around it, behind which a great deal of building work has been going on. You will never find just
a few cars driving by during daylight hours, at any time of the year, as this is one of the central traffic hubs. For most
visitors Omonia will be a fume-filled noisy nightmare (ironically, its name means Harmony Square). It is a raucous reminder
of the modern Athens that exists behind the picture postcards, with its metro station, fast-food joints, dubious hotels and
even more dubious char-acters, including a recent influx of refugees from Albania and Eastern Europe, begging or selling cheap
imported cigarettes and other goods. It may not be the prettiest aspect of Athens, but it remains a prominent and unavoidable
face of this Balkan city.
