Píli (Pýli) Adrianoú (Hadrian's Arch)

( Highly Recommended )

Along with the Acropolis and the adjacent Temple of Olympian Zeus, Hadrian's Arch is one of the first ancient sights visitors see when reaching the city centre from the airport. It tells you that you are in a very old city - literally so, as the inscription on one side reads 'This is Athens, the ancient city of Theseus', and on the other, 'This is the city of Hadrian and not of Theseus'. On the Acropolis side of the Arch you were in the ancient city, and on the other side you were in the modern Roman version. Hadrian's marble arch was built in the 2nd century AD, roughly contemporaneous with the Temple of Olympian Zeus.
