Known locally as Stíles Olympíou Díos, in its day this was the largest temple in Greece, its day being from about AD 130 onwards, when Emperor Hadrian completed work on it. He dedicated it to Olympian Zeus during the Pan hellenic festival in AD 132. It was begun in the 6th century BC, with several unsuccessful attempts made to complete the massive project - the temple dwarfed the Parthenon and the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. The 15 columns that remain give a sense of the scale: there were originally 104 of them, each 17m high. One crashed spectacularly in 1852 and has been left where it fell. The columns look very impressive at sunrise, and when floodlit.
