Mouseío Kanellópoulos (Kanellopoulos Museum)

( Highly Recommended )

This neo-classical mansion in the Pláka is easily visited while walking up to the Acropolis, and well merits a lengthy look. The house itself was built in 1884 and has been renovated to show off the private collection, put together over the years by Paul and Alexandra Kanellopoulos and now owned by the Greek government. The collection is very well displayed on several floors, with information available in Greek and English, although more details about specific objects rather than general descriptions of the contents of each case would be welcome.
As with any private collection it is eclectic, and this one ranges from the sacred to the profane. The latter is represented by erotic carvings of satyrs chasing, and sometimes catching, nymphs around the typical Greek red-on-black vases, which were being made in Athens in the 7th century BC. The sacred is represented by an extensive collection of icons on the ground floor. There is also some Mycenean gold and examples of arts and crafts by the Minoans, the Phoenicians and from Egypt, Italy and elsewhere. The collection covers the 3rd century BC to the 19th century. Note the huge block of stone on the ground floor, which fell from the Acropolis. There is some intricate Persian jewellery, and bead and glass work. Statues are also a feature, as is a fine bust of Alexander the Great.
