Exárcheia (Exarchia)

( Worth Seeing )

This neighbourhood has long been the local hang-out for students, and came to the eyes of the world on 17 November 1973, when students occupied the Polytechnic in protest against more than six years of dictatorship by the Colonels. After several days the Colonels sent in the tanks, killing an unknown number of students and beginning the end of their own downfall. The Polytechnic building, at the junction of 28 Oktovriou and Stournari, still bears some of the scars. Walk up Stournari to the lively little Exarchia Square, filled with bars and cafés, for a feel of the area. At night the streets are livelier still, with more bars and ouzeries opening up and quickly filling - to remain full until the early hours.
