Also known as the Royal Gardens, these were created in the 1840s under the direction of Queen Amalia, wife of Otto, the first King of Greece. They cover 16ha and offer a shady, peaceful retreat from the noisy city streets: ponds filled with fish and terrapins, tree-lined paths, fountains, cafés and children's play areas. Other attractions include a children's library and a small Botanical Museum. Less pleasing are stray cats and a sad attempt at a zoo. At the southern end stands the Zappeion, built in the late 19th century by two wealthy Greek-Romanians as an exhibition hall, and now used as a conference centre.
