This is not well signposted, but is the ugly block of a building opposite the rather more attractive-looking Hilton Hotel. As a National Gallery it is disappointing compared to equivalent galleries in other European capitals. But it is worth visiting to see the work of Greek artists, including five paintings by perhaps the greatest of them all, El Greco. Some older Greek land- and sea scapes are enjoyable for those who know the country, regardless of their artistic merit. Other European artists represented include Picasso, Brueghel, Rembrandt, Goya, Caravaggio and Van Dyck, but not even this small collec tion is permanently on display. The Gallery proper, only accessible through the front rooms where temporary exhibitions are held, closes while exhibitions are mounted or dismantled.
