| AAA's Top Ten Gas Saving Tips |
- Modify your speed. Driving 55 instead of 65 can improve your mileage by a whopping 15 percent! Avoid jackrabbit starts – quick starts and stops use more fuel. Use cruise control on the open road to maximize fuel efficiency.
- Shop around. On average, prices between stations for regular unleaded gasoline can vary by as much as twenty-five cents a gallon! Log on to AAA.com to access the Fuel Finder and the best prices in your neighborhood and workplace.
- Turn off your car when it idles for more than a few minutes. When you can park and walk in as opposed to using a drive-through, walk. It will make you, your pocketbook, and the environment healthier. Avoid “warming up” your car, too. Doing so for more than a minute or two wastes fuel and is not recommended by vehicle manufacturers.
- Consider your car a bus, not a taxi. Like a bus, plan your route efficiently with necessary stops and errands along the way. Avoid impulse trips.
- Tune-up your car. Get your car in the best possible shape. Anything from a dirty oil filter to faulty spark plugs can drastically reduce fuel economy.
- Properly inflate your tires. Low tire pressure and wheel alignment problems reduce fuel efficiency.
- Lighten your load. Excess weight is a drag—on your car and your mileage. Remove cargo holders and racks and excess trunk items you’re not using.
- Stay cool. The best fuel economy comes with windows up and air conditioning off. But practically speaking, drive with windows up on the highway to reduce drag, and your A/C on low. Open your windows for fresh air in the city when driving more slowly.
- Car pool and conserve. Join a friend, car pool your kids, ride a bike or walk when possible. Consider whether or not mass transit can provide you with viable alternatives under certain circumstances.
- Buy the most fuel-efficient vehicle that meets your needs. Do you really require seating for eight? If it’s time to buy or trade, think maximum fuel economy.
