Blue Grass Auto Club Safety Foundation

Mission Statement

The Blue Grass Auto Club Safety Foundation was established in response to a growing need for stronger traffic safety programs. A non-profit organization funded entirely by contributions, the Foundation serves mainly as an educational resource, providing school and communities with the materials and programs designed to increase public awareness of traffic safety.

The Foundation has placed special emphasis on the following areas of concentration: School Safety Patrol, school bus safety, alcohol education, driver information and education, bicycle and pedestrian safety, video loan library, driver improvement for mature operators, safety restraints and public awareness campaigns.

You can contact the Safety Foundation by calling 859-233-1111 or 1-800-568-5222.

AAA Releases Roadwise Review CD-ROM

Roadwise Review: A Tool to Help Seniors Drive Safely Longer, is a CD-ROM that measures eight physical and mental abilities shown to be the strongest predictors of crash risk among older drivers, as validated in research sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the National Institute on Aging. After users have completed the various testing areas, they are then provided with feedback to help guide their driving decisions.

Using videos and easy-to-follow instructions, Roadwise screens drivers in the following eight functional areas: Leg Strength and General Mobility, Head/Neck Flexibility, High Contrast Visual Acuity, Low Visual Acuity, Working Memory, Visualization of Missing Information, Visual Search and Useful Field of View.

Roadwise uses an integrated data system that reports and provides users with confidential feedback about screening results and its CD-ROM format is compatible with most home computers.

Copies of the Roadwise Review program were donated to various senior centers and libraries, and the Safety Foundation also has a limited number of copies available for loan. Roadwise Review is also available for purchase (AAA members $3/Non-members $5) from local AAA branch locations.

For more information on Roadwise Review contact AAA Blue Grass/Kentucky at 859-233-1111 or 1-800-568-5222.

Crash Course DVD

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, in collaboration with the Better Business Bureau, released a DVD/VHS entitled Crash Course: what to know before and after a collision. Crash Course teaches what you need to know about insurance and traffic safety before a collision occurs, tips at the scene of a crash, and what you'll need to know after a collision. The DVD features a unique and engaging interactive menu that guides viewers through the three chapters, similar to an interactive adventure novel.

The Crash Course DVD has features, not available on the VHS, including AAA Foundation's traffic safety videos, Children in Traffic and Breaking the Accident Chain of Events. Additional resources on the DVD version include a state-by-state menu of motor vehicle and insurance laws.

Copies are available for purchase through the Better Business Bureau. Additionally, the Safety Foundation has Crash Course available for loan.

Driver Education Resources

Each of the following driver education resources can be purchased by contacting the Safety Foundation. A limited number of each are also available to borrow from the Safety Foundation Library.

Teaching Your Teens to Drive is available on DVD or VHS and comes with a colorfully illustrated handbook. The program consists of 13 lessons focusing on developing the following skills: Basic vehicle control, Positioning and speed adjustment, Passing and off-road maneuvers, Visual search habits, Freeway and night driving, Driving on slippery surfaces and Reducing risks.

Driver-Zed for Adult Drivers guides you through 67 real-life driving sequences designed to enhance your ability to recognize and deal with emerging risks. The driving sequences take place in a mix of highway, urban and rural settings. Over the course of three 45-minute sessions, the program places you in a broad variety of potentially dangerous situations.

Driver-Zed for Teens puts drivers into more than 80 live-action situations-the equivalent of several years of actual driving. Drivers face everything from a child chasing a ball into the street to dangerous two-lane passing. Driver-Zed for Teens is a great way for teens to learn how to see danger by actually experiencing it on the computer instead of behind the wheel.
