Consumer Fuel Saving Tips

  • Carpool, ride the bus, bike, or walk when you can.  By leaving your vehicle at home one day a week, you can reduce your fuel consumption by as much as 20 percent.

  • Heed your speed. Gas mileage decreases quickly beyond speeds of 60 mph. In fact, every 5 mph over 60 mph is like paying an additional $0.24 per gallon.

  • Drive it like you own it. Speeding/rapid acceleration/braking can lower gas mileage by more than 30 percent at highway speeds and five percent around town. In dry road conditions, use cruise control to maintain speed.
  • Avoid rush hour.  Stop and go traffic negatively affects your fuel economy. If possible, stagger work hours to avoid rush hour.

  • Combine trips.  Save on fuel and cut down on wear and tear by choosing the shortest route to your destination and combining short trips whenever possible.

  • Travel light. The more your vehicle weighs the more fuel it requires to accelerate. Beyond the essentials, such as an emergency roadside kit, look for non-essential items to remove from your vehicle to keep more fuel in your tank.

  • Buy regular grade gasoline. Don’t buy premium grade gasoline if your vehicle doesn’t require it.

  • Turn to technology. There are a variety of tools that can help you find the cheapest fuel in your neighborhood and factor current fuel prices into your budget:
    • Fuel Price Finder locates the cheapest fuel price in your area.

    • Fuel Cost Calculator calculates your trip costs using your vehicle's make, model and year.

    • TripTik Mobile is a mobile app that provides door-to-door directions, fuel prices and much more along your travel route.

  • Save when you spend. Some grocery stores host their own gas stations, or partner with others, and reward frequent customers with savings of three to 10 cents per gallon. In addition, AAA's Member Rewards Visa® Credit Card allows motorists to accumulate points on fuel purchases.

  • Vehicle maintenance. Proper vehicle maintenance not only extends the life of your vehicle, it also ensures you're achieving maximum fuel economy.
